Grundy Center advances to 5th straight championship game after lopsided win vs Columbus Catholic

Grundy Center is on its way to the final round of the IHSAA football playoffs for a fifth straight year.

The Spartans downed the Columbus Catholic Sailors of Waterloo 42-7 in their semi-final match in the UNI-Dome Friday morning on action heard on 1650-102.3 The Fan.

The Sailors end their 2023 campaign 9-3, making their first semi-final appearance since 2004, when they won the Class 2A state title.

The reigning Class A state champion Spartans were led by star quarterback Colin Gordon, who finished with 235 total yards and 4 total touchdowns.

The move from Class A up to Class 1A has proven to be no problem for the Spartans, as they have continued to dominate every opponent on their way to an undefeated record.

Grundy Center (12-0) will look to complete a perfect season in the Class 1A State Championship Game next Thursday at 4 p.m. against MFL MarMac (11-1).
