Waverly-Shell Rock rescinds offer to join Mississippi Valley Conference, set to apply to WaMaC

The Waverly-Shell Rock School Board has voted unanimously to rescind its vote to join the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Waverly-Shell Rock will now apply to join the Wamac Conference for all sports except for boys’ and girls’ wrestling, and will seek membership in the MVC for wrestling only.
This decision was made after athletics director Greg Bodensteiner found that most coaches would prefer to join the Wamac.

According to Jeff Linder from The Gazette, one athletics director from a Wamac school said that the conference has yet to receive a formal inquiry from Waverly-Shell Rock, while also saying that the expectation is that their eventual application “will get zero support.”

Waverly-Shell Rock has been a member of the Northeast Iowa Conference for 90 years, but the other five NEIC schools voted to remove Waverly-Shell Rock from the league effective June 30, 2023, citing an imbalance in size.
