Northeast Iowa Conference executive board votes 5-1 to remove Waverly-Shell Rock

The status of the Northeast Iowa Conference took another turn yesterday.

The NEIC’s executive board voted 5-1 to remove Waverly-Shell Rock from the conference. Waverly-Shell Rock had the lone dissenting vote.

The superintendents will take this newest resolution back to their respective school boards. If passed, Waverly-Shell Rock will be subtracted from the league at the end of the 2022-23 school year.

The Upper Iowa Conference recently invited New Hampton, Crestwood and Waukon to leave the Northeast Iowa Conference and if one of those schools leaves the conference would be left with just five schools and according to its bylaws would not be able to continue.

The strategy behind removing Waverly-Shell Rock is that another smaller school might be more likely to join the conference and keep it solvent.

The NEIC has been in existence since 1920.
