Waterloo East High School names Mikayla Montgomery new volleyball coach

Mikayla Montgomery has been hired by Waterloo East High School as its new volleyball coach.

Montgomery is a 2007 graduate of East, when she was Mikayla Sims. She’s a 2012 graduate of Drake and was a three-time All-Mississippi Valley Conference selection, first team Iowa Class 4A All State honoree as a senior, and a three-year letter winner in both volleyball and basketball at Waterloo East High School.

As a Freshman, Montgomery established herself quickly in the Drake rotation before injuries forced her to redshirt. She was named MVC Newcomer of the Week for the Drake Bulldogs during her redshirt freshman season. In 2010, she played in 29 matches, and was also named team captain for the Drake Bulldogs.

“I am so excited to be back at East High coaching,” said Montgomery. “There is a great group of players with a ton of experience that I can’t wait to coach and see compete in a new conference. As they say: ‘Once a Trojan, always a Trojan!’”

“We’re excited about coach Montgomery stepping into the role as East High’s Head Volleyball coach,” said Tim Moses, East High Athletic Director. “Montgomery’s background in volleyball and experience at the collegiate level will bring a sense of enthusiasm and continue to help develop a championship mindset within the volleyball program.”
