Gavyn Thoreson scored in the second and third periods, then delivered the shootout winner to lift the Black Hawks past the Youngstown Phantoms, 3-2. The win moves Waterloo to within three points of the Sioux City Musketeers for second place in the USHL Western Conference.
The Hawks host the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m. on Friday.
