Waterloo’s Jefferson Street Corridor Wins Regional Phoenix Award
Earlier this month, the City of Waterloo received a Phoenix Award at the National Brownfields Conference in Detroit, Michigan. The honor recognizes the Jefferson Street Corridor for extraordinary brownfield redevelopment. The city’s project included the former Grand Hotel site (now Grand Crossing I and II condominiums), the former Waterloo Bowl-Inn site (now the Hawkeye Community College Van G. Miller Advanced Learning Center), the former Wonder Bread Bakery (now SingleSpeed Brewing Company) and smaller buildings ravaged by the 2008 flood (now the home of the Cedar Valley SportsPlex). The amount of total investment is near $100 million in the area.
The redevelopment team includes: City of Waterloo, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Small Business Administration, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Economic Development Authority, Main Street Iowa, Black Hawk Gaming Commission, Waterloo Development Corporation, Echo Development Group,
Hawkeye Community College, SingleSpeed Brewing Company, HR Green, Inc., and Vandewalle and Associates.
