Two area athletes win titles at girls state wrestling, IGHSAU announces it will sanction sport

The Girls State Wrestling Tournament concluded Saturday.

Waverly-Shell Rock won its fourth consecutive team title, recording 219 points, 60 more than runner-up Colfax-Mingo.

Two area athletes won individual tiles. Union-LaPorte City freshman Jillian Worthen won at 100 pounds, and Waverly-Shell Rock senior Eva Diaz won her 2nd state title as she claimed the championship at 115.

During this weekend’s tournament the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced it will sanction girls wrestling starting next year.

The Board of Directors voted unanimously to sanction girls wrestling as the organization’s 11th sport. The decision was announced prior to the start of the championship round of the Girls State Wrestling Tournament in Coralville on Saturday.

According to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union,  58 schools in Iowa have already committed to sponsoring girls wrestling programs.
