Honor Flight Veterans Meet in Waterloo

Organizer Craig White explains the history of Waterloo Honor Flight.

A group of 80 Northeast Iowa Veterans, including three from Charles City and two from New Hampton, will travel to Washington DC on May 11 with the Waterloo Honor Flight.

Last night the veterans met in Waterloo for an orientation to learn details about their one-day, whirlwind tour of our nation’s capital. Allen Williams of Charles City served in the Navy from 1969 to 1972 and said he learned about the free trip through his volunteer work for veterans.

Williams served during the Vietnam war as a Navy Seabee.

Dennis Raab of Charles City volunteered for the Navy in 1965 and served for ten years.

Raab says he is looking forward to the trip, and says the Vietnam Memorial has special meaning to him.

In addition to Williams and Raab, these area veterans will fly the charter flight to Washington DC: Alvin Davidson of Charles City, who served in the Korean War; Ronald Heller of New Hampton and Jerry Barta of New Hampton, who both served during the Vietnam War.

Coloff Media stations KCHA and 95.1 The Bull will provide reports during the trip on the air throughout the day on May 11th.
