Iowa State freshman point guard Tyrese Hunter enters transfer portal

Iowa State guard Tyrese Hunter announced today that he’s entering the transfer portal.

The Racine, Wisconsin native was expected to be the centerpiece of the program moving forward under head coach T.J. Otzelberger and is coming off a freshman campaign where he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year while helping Iowa State reach its first Sweet 16 since 2016.

Hunter started all 35 games for the Cyclones and finished second on the team averaging 11 points and a team-high 4.9-assists per game. He broke the single-season program record for assists and steals by a freshman.

Rated as the No. 35 player in the 2021 recruiting class by 247Sports, Hunter originally committed to former Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm before reaffirming his commitment to the program last spring after Otzelberger took the reigns.
